The first trailer for Supergirl is a rollicking road trip blast, giving us a glimpse of Kara’s quarter-life crisis across space with Krypto in tow.
A Blondie needle drop smash-cuts into a scene showing us what Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) has been up to since we last saw her in Superman. The cool music choice from director Craig Gillespie emphasizes that Kara is not her cousin Clark. There are no rousing instrumentals here setting the stage for a hero; this is pure party, on-a-bender energy. For a fun time raging across the stars, Kara is who you call.
The movie is based on DC Comics’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and from what we’ve seen, Alcock (House of the Dragon) brings a refreshing take on the character. Supergirl isn’t spic and span like Superman; she’s messy—a 23-year-old Kryptonian dissociating from the trauma of watching her home planet, people, and parents die.
It’s not until she finds another galactic displaced girl that she’s reminded of things she might not want to face, but as fate would have it, it’s time for her to sober up and face reality. “He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth,” she says, stopping any Superman comparisons in their tracks.
We’re excited for Gillespie’s vision as fans of his work with Emma Stone in Cruella and Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, both films about imperfect people you can’t help but root for. Gillespie has a flair for letting female-fronted stories take center stage, enhanced by his stylistic choices.
That shot of Kara reaching out for Krypto—seeing herself reflected in her best friend’s eyes in what could be his last moments—gives me so much “does the dog die?” anxiety, so thank you, DC Studios, for putting that shot in there. Thankfully, the trailer also shows us Kara kicking some serious ass when she takes up the Supergirl mantle.
We’re ready for Kara and Krypto’s space odyssey, and summer can’t come soon enough! Supergirl will hit theaters June 26, 2026.
