Eight-year-old boy in intensive care after quad bike accident in Bali

Josh Schuetz was left in a coma after a quad bike accident on the island.

Family friend BJ Ariasa told 9News it had “been an intense 24 hours to be honest”.

Schuetz was in Bali with his team ahead of their first international tournament when tragedy struck yesterday.

A quad bike he was riding with his big brother flipped.

“They had helmets on, they weren’t going fast, it was a supposedly safe environment to be in,” Ariasa said.

The young footballer suffered a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain. He’s now in a coma in intensive care after emergency surgery.

“The oldest in our team is only nine, so explaining this to him … has not been easy,” Ariasa said through tears.

Perth doctors are set to accompany Schuetz on a mercy flight home tomorrow as his parents take with them a massive hospital bill.

“It could be more than $100,000 I’m not sure, I’d say a minimum of $100,000,” Ariasa said.

But the community is rallying behind them, raising more than $50,000 by tonight via an online fundraiser.

While Schuetz fights for his life, the Cockburn Wolves prepare to play in his honour on Saturday.

“They’re tough but they’re in shock and they’re very worried for their teammate,” Ariasa said.
